UVIG Operating Impacts & Integration Studies User Group Meeting

Featuring guest panelist Dr Tao Guo (Regional Director
US West Coast) Energy Exemplar LLC

Location: Anchorage, AK
Dates: 20th May 2014

Panel Discussion Continued on the Links Between the Forecast and the Unit Commitment Programs and Associated Algorithms.

This user group meeting will consist of a panel discussion with a focus on short-term forecasting and unit commitment. This discussion is an outgrowth of the realization that significant improvements in the short-term forecast (<6 hr) lead to relatively small improvements in the production cost savings. In parallel, there is evidence from previous studies that a perfect forecast may not lead to the minimum production cost, at least with some current modeling tools, and rather a smoothed forecast may perform better. There are some not-so-obvious interactions between forecasts and unit commitment that will be explored in this panel. The first half of the panel discussion will explore the relationships between improved short term forecasts and production cost savings, and the second half of the panel will take a closer look at the links between the forecast and the unit commitment programs and associated algorithms. Dr Tao Guo, Regional Director for Energy Exemplar LLC West Coast will be amongst the leading experts in the industry including Gene Hinkle from GE, Gary Moland from DNV & NREL’s research perspective, Erik Ela from NREL, discussing the links between the forecast and the unit commitment programs and associated algorithms.

This course will attract power systems engineering and management personnel from utilities, RTOs/ISOs, and independent transmission companies as well as consultants, manufacturers and developers involved in integration studies, forecasting methods and operating impacts

The energy market is becoming increasingly competitive and volatile. The key to maintaining a competitive advantage is to develop effective quantitative models to forecast the macro performance of commodities over time and their impact on pricing and trading strategies. With the impact of renewables, the energy market is in need of developing new practical models that can help with price forecasting, tackling volatility and optimising portfolio strategies.

With the changing global economy, there are still lots of questions that remain unaddressed such as, When and How to Implement effective quantitative models to tackle volatility and price swings? What are the best ways to Capitalise on best application models to increase your investments? How to mitigate market risks, volatility and price fluctuation to maximise asset value? What are the options to better model your performance to offset risks and develop effective hedging strategies? How to improve the understanding of renewable production and benchmark your modelling strategies? By attending the Quantitative Analysis and Physical asset valuation for the Energy markets 2014 such questions and issues can be addressed by the many professionals in the industry.

Dr Christos Papadopoulos, Regional Manager for Europe will be speaking on behalf of Energy Exemplar, discussing the complications and effective solutions to Physical Asset Valuation using our cutting edge software, PLEXOS® Integrated Energy Model. PLEXOS meets the demands of market participants, planners, investors, regulators, consultants and analysts alike with a comprehensive range of features spanning all aspects of electric power and gas market modelling from economic dispatch and stochastic unit commitment, through medium-term market analysis and hydro and portfolio optimisation, to long-term capacity expansion planning, all delivered through a single fully-integrated simulation engine.

The past few years have witnessed the need for many such mid-course corrections in integrated resource planning methodology. The advance of renewable and distributed energy resources, slumping load growth, aggressive air quality regulations, greater emphasis on energy efficiency and demand side strategies — these and other shifts to what had been business as usual for utilities, have prompted innovations to the IRP process.

This program will provide a solid survey of current thinking and methodologies as the basis for ensuring that current integrated resource plans measure up to a power organization’s future operational requirements. It will feature leading utility and other power resource planning professionals and experts addressing the key issues associated with these emerging operational environmental mandates, intermittent and variable energy resources, regulatory policies, and uncertainty factors.

Energy Exemplar is the official Gold-class sponsor for the 2014 EUCI conference on Utility Resource Planning Addressing Emerging Utility Operational Challenges. Take the opportunity to interact with our expert staff in Power Systems and Energy Market Modelling and see first-hand our cutting edge, number one chosen energy market simulation software, PLEXOS® Integrated Energy Model. Dr Randell Johnson, Energy Exemplar’s Regional Director for US East Coast will be discussing the topics on ‘Generation and Transmission Co-optimization under Dynamic Conditions’ and ‘Addressing Gas/Electric Power Convergence’ using real-time scenarios, modelling and cost-cutting solutions in PLEXOS®.

See first-hand some of the new features and applications of the PLEXOS® Gas-Electric Model including Generation, Transmission, Capacity Expansion Planning, Ancillary Services, Electricity Price Forecasting, Gas Modelling, Hydro and much more… Plus you will enjoy the many free promotional give-aways of Energy Exemplar and PLEXOS and what we promise will be a truly memorable PLEXOS experience.

As natural gas plays a more dominant role in the fuel mix, the natural gas and electric utility industries are struggling to synchronize their technologies and business practices to minimize coordination and reliability issues. The impending decline in nuclear, oil, and coal plant deployments further accelerates this coordination requirement.

This conference will serve as a forum to consolidate the “wisdom” gleaned from the regional and national initiatives underway to identify and resolve these natural gas and electric coordination issues. It will define known conflicts, as well as highlight tools and strategies available to address these matters. It will also consider lessons learned from recent coordination and interconnection “events,” with a look to informing specific players active in the two industries – vertically integrated utilities, gas utilities, transmission and local distribution companies, merchant power producers, infrastructure (grid and system operators), regulators, service providers – on what they can do to deal with these challenges in real time, and what changes are contemplated for the future.

Energy Exemplar will be the ‘front runner’ at this conference participating as the official Gold-class sponsor. Take the opportunity to interact with our expert staff in Power Systems and Energy Market Modelling and see first-hand our cutting edge, number one chosen energy market simulation software, PLEXOS® Integrated Energy Model. Dr Randell Johnson, Energy Exemplar’s Regional Director for US East Coast will be discussing the topics on ‘Balancing Resource Adequacy, Reliability, and Market Rules’ and ‘Effective Planning Approaches’ using real-time scenarios, modelling and cost-cutting solutions in PLEXOS®.
