Short Course Modelling the Performance Risk of Electricity Assets

Short Course Modelling the Performance Risk of Electricity Assets

When: 25th – 26th November 2014
Where: London, United Kingdom
Venue: London Business School

The Course:

Modelling the Performance Risk of Electricity Assets is a two-day advanced workshop. It is aimed at analysts, regulators, policy-makers, asset managers and advisors who are all facing the challenges of understanding the financial performance risk of both new and existing electricity generating assets. With huge structural change in the technology capacity mix for production, induced by low carbon targets, as well as demand erosion and re-profiling, confounded by the intermittency of increased renewable penetration, commodity risk and political uncertainties, these modelling challenges have never been greater. Load factor risk, price risk and debt coverage risks are crucial, affecting overall financial performance and valuation of existing assets and well as new investment prospects. In this course, we offer training in using the most appropriate statistical and fundamental modelling approaches in practice.

This is a unique course which brings together highly experienced innovators in this sector. London Business School has developed model-based approaches for electricity markets since the 1980s, through two periods of market reform in Britain, firstly the Pool in the 1990s, then NETA ten years later and now EMR. Specialist courses for the energy sector have been offered, worldwide, for over 20 years, with extensive advisory work. As developers of the PLEXOS modelling platform, Energy Exemplar has become the pre-eminent software provider for modelling investment, dispatch and the performance of physical assets. The two-day course integrates the special expertise of each organisation to provide intuitive, practical and hand-on training. It is directed jointly by Professor Derek Bunn and Dr Christos Papadopoulos.

The Topics:

On the first day, the focus is a data-based perspective of some of the more advanced time series methods for electricity risk.

  • Introduction to power price and asset performance risk in the short and long term.
  • Fundamental statistical simulation of the financial performance of electricity assets.
  • A Ratings Agency Perspective on Asset Performance Risks.
  • Time series models for spot and forward prices.
  • Volatility models including GARCH and Quantile regresssion for VaR.
  • Practical workshop using Eviews.

Although these are leading-edge techniques, only a very basic knowledge of statistics is required as they will be taught in an intuitive, practical style.

On the second day, the focus turns to complementary insights from fundamental modelling.

  • An introduction to modelling the modern Mix & Complexity of Energy Assets in PLEXOS.
  • Modelling the intrinsic value of a generation asset via Spreads and operations in realistic Power & Gas Systems & Markets.
  • Scenarios, Monte Carlo Simulations and Stochastic Optimisation.
  • VaR Optimisation – Revenue at Risk (RaR) & Profit at Risk (PaR).
  • Market Design Implications including CfD and Capacity Market Modelling.

The Arrangements:

The course is delivered in central London, with Registration at 09:00 and a Reception from 17:15 on November 25, 2014 at London Business School. The course will finish at 17:00pm on November 26, 2014.

The fee is £900 +VAT, payable in advance. The deadline for registration is Monday 17th November, with payment by 21st November to confirm participation. The fee does not include accommodation, and is subject to a cancellation charge of 50% if a reservation is cancelled within 2 weeks of the course start date. There is no cancellation charge if refund requests are received before the two week deadline. The organisers also reserve the right to cancel the course with full refund, but no further compensation, up to two weeks beforehand.

Energy Exemplar’s Paper on Renewable Generation Integration Promoted Live on Electric Energy Online

For well over a decade,Electric Energy Online has worked to become the leading provider of the latest information, knowledge, and understanding of the electric industry focusing on transmission and distribution that spans the globe. For the month of November, the Electric Energy Online website will promote the published paper by Energy Exemplar’s Regional Director for West Coast, Dr Tao Guo, titled ‘Renewable Generation Integration Study by PLEXOS’. Energy Exemplar performs a few renewable generation integration studies using the 3-stage DA-HA-RT sequential simulation approach to mimic the real world power system operation. The solutions from the sub-hourly RT simulation include the over-generation, un-served energy, and reserve shortfalls. Usually the non-zero values of these indices indicate the system is not ready for the renewable generation or has inadequate ramp capacity. In addition, the 3-stage Da-HA-RT sequential simulation approach can quantify the effectiveness of the system operation procedure evolution, new products and more.
